ROAD CROSSING PATROLS | The Traffic Management and Road Safety Team currently manage 46 Road Crossing Patrol sites across the Island.
The Isle of Wight Council’s road crossing patrols are a dedicated team of people.
- They are there come rain, hail, snow or sunshine
- They play a vital part in protecting vulnerable members of our community
- They only work for an hour or so each day but without them, children could be at risk
- They are much appreciated by those who use the service they provide
- They have a high degree of ‘job satisfaction’
| | Sites on the Isle of Wight | | A number of these 46 sites are vacant at the moment. If you are aged over 18 and are in good health, you could apply for a job. Contact your local road safety team for details of vacancies, pay and conditions. Relief patrols are also needed to cover a site or group of sites when the regular patrol is off work. This may suit you if you only want occasional work or are concerned about a particular Road Crossing Patrol point not being staffed. | Parents | Although we provide road crossing patrols, parents are still responsible for making sure their children get to school safely. Remember if you are crossing with your child at a patrol site: - Don’t follow the patrol out into the road
- Only walk across when the patrol tells you
- Always walk in front of the patrol, not behind
| | Drivers | | The law requires drivers to stop when a road crossing patrol raises his or her stop sign. Drivers who do not stop could receive a £1000 fine, three penalty points, or be disqualified from driving. The Isle of Wight Council is working with Shanklin Road’s Policing Unit to ensure drivers not abiding by the law are prosecuted. | |
