Campaign: Island Games
Locations: Various
Background & Purpose
The Natwest International Island Games are held every 2 years and are an
international sporting event, where the competitors represent Islands from
all over the world. The Isle of Wight hosted the Games last in 1993. This
was a success but the event did not bring the benefits of hosting which are
expected of the 2011 Games (positive PR for the host partners, a lasting health
and fitness legacy on the Island, enhanced job opportunities, both paid and
volunteering, etc).
The Island Games 2011 have been brought to the Isle of Wight by the Isle
of Wight Island Games Association, in collaboration with the Isle of Wight
Council.
The main objectives for the Isle of Wight Council are:
- Raise the awareness of the importance of physical and cultural activities
for individual health and well-being.
- Deliver sustainable improvements in the physical sports infrastructure
of the Island (facilities).
- Create a sustainable increase in the number of participants and volunteers
in sport.
- Deliver a sustainable increase in the number of Island sportspeople participating
in international competitions.
- Improve school/club links to avoid duplication and provide seamless pathways
for the talented and gifted.
- Creation and development of a pool of sporting ambassadors to promote
the Island and its key messages to the widest audience.
- Maximise the use of the Island Games as a vehicle for broadcasting agreed
messages about the Island to the widest possible audience.
- Achieve recognition of the Island as a venue for international events
and activities.
- Maximise all possible linkage to the London 2012 Olympics.
- Maximise the learning opportunities for young people and adults from
the Games.
