Background and purpose:
This project will deliver enhanced maintenance and cleansing of the public
realm. There are specific areas that need to be addressed. These areas are
litter bin cleaning and replacement, more frequent emptying of dog bins, cleaning
of bus shelters and other street furniture, more frequent beach cleaning and
additional resources to deal with fly tipping. These are all problems highlighted
in the residents survey.
Action is being taken to address problems with litter and street cleansing
across the Island
This will also contribute to engendering a sense of pride within the area and contribute to the local economy by attracting visitors and tourists. The project will contribute to building stronger and safer communities.
Cleaning, painting and repairing Street Furniture
£500,000 was set aside to clean, paint and repair street furniture in the West Wight, Bay Area (Sandown and Shanklin) and East Cowes. Since April 2007, work has been ongoing to identify the scope of what will be done in these areas. This has resulted in a programme that will have two phases. Phase 1 will address esplanades and town centre areas, Phase 2 will deal with the areas beyond the esplanades and town centres.
