Campaign: Public conveniences
Background and purpose:
The 2006 Residents survey identified public realm improvements one of the
key areas where the council must work on, in particular public conveniences.
The council currently manage some 71 public conveniences Island wide. The
majority are dated and have suffered from underinvestment in building maintenance
and decoration for several years and now require substantial investment to
bring them up to current day standards. The number of facilities provided
by the Council is one of the highest in the Country in relation to the resident
population they serve. The Project will comprise a series of individual reconstruction
and refurbishment projects over 2007/08
Progress report:
- Refurbishment - work at Eastern Gardens, Devonia Sandown complete
- Refurbishment - The Parade, Cowes in progress
- Rebuild – outline designs have been completed for The Cascade,
Ventnor and Yaverland Car Park, Brading and Brannan Way in Wootton.
- Toilet Attendants – arrangements are in place to cover toilets Ryde,
Sandown, Shanklin and Cowes during the peak summer months with additional
provision for Cowes week
Activities for next period:
- Planning Application due shortly for Cascade, Ventnor, Yaverland car
park, Brading and Brannan Way following completion of the consultation process
with the town and parish councils and their consultation with the public.
- Refurbishment - Complete work at Eastern Gardens, Sandown and The Parade,
Cowes
- Rebuild – commence works at The Cut, Cowes.
