Campaign: Free swims for young people
Background
Swimming is a popular activity among families and young people. It has some
of the highest participation rates of any form of physical activity. Increased
participation in such an activity will have a major effect on the health of
large numbers of families and young people. This scheme was piloted by the
Welsh assembly, where participation rates in swimming have increased by as
much as 50%.
The initiative aims to increase physical activity rates in young people and
to meet the childhood obesity agenda.
Progress Report
- In conjunction with the Primary Care Team and the Islands Physical Activity
Alliance, the Council has been offering free swims this year with participation
increasing by as much as 30%
- The scheme aims to increase physical activity amongst the islands juniors,
by increasing participation rates and meeting the childhood obesity agenda.
- Living on an island it is important that the islands youth have a knowledge
and confidence in the water.
- The scheme aims to support and meet the government target of 85% of all
key stage 2 pupils being able to swim 25 metres of more
Activities for Next period
- The scheme will for the first time be rolled out to cover the full summer
holiday period for all Junior residents
