Raising standards in Island schools

Background and purpose:

To raise standards in Island schools at key stage 2, 3 and 4 to national averages through a programme of leadership support at all middle and high schools which focuses on pupil data management, effective quality assurance systems and processes and preventative strategies.

The Local Authority is in partnership with the DCSF (Department for Children, School and Families) and the National Strategies to raise standards of attainment in Isle of Wight Schools. The Authority has received £1.3million in financial support and has appointed Mouchel Parkman (who work with government, schools and other educational establishments to deliver excellent education services and higher achievement for learners) to lead the support work with the Authority and Schools. There are four work streams.

Progress Report:
The first work stream focuses on those schools with the most significant need to raise standards. The high support schools were the initial focus from January 2007 onwards. For each school of the thirteen schools there is an agreed strategic improvement and implementation plan. Implementation is under way in all the schools.

Through the second work stream the Local Authority (LA) have invited a further 15 schools to join a programme targeted at moving schools from being satisfactory to good. All the schools invited have met with LA and Mouchel Parkman. A carefully developed range of developmental work is available and schools with consultant support will be shaping their development programme from the beginning of the Autumn Term.

Activities for Next Period:
There is a further work steam being developed on transition which will have a significant impact for the transition for pupils from year 4 into year 5 and for those pupils moving into year 9 into the newly developing post 14 curriculum environment. The leading LA and MouchelParkman staff are in the process of planning this third work stream before they share with colleagues and schools. This work stream will have a particular focus on developing the KS2 and KS3 curriculum and improving attendance.

The final work stream will be developing an access and inclusion strategy. At the same time, work will be going on within the context of redrafting the school improvement strategy to improve the LAs capacity to challenge, monitor and support schools.
