Help to Live Independently at Home

What is Occupational Therapy?


Occupational Therapists are trained to assess the difficulties disabled people may experience with daily living activities.

Occupational Therapists work together with disabled people in identifying and working through any problem areas with them to enable them to gain or regain their independence.

The assistance offered may include assessment, advice, information, equipment and home adaptations.

Who can have Occupational Therapy?


Any Isle of Wight resident who has a permanent and substantial disability and is experiencing practical difficulties managing personal care and practical tasks.

It is important we ensure that arranging help and care for the most vulnerable and frail people in our community come first. However, there are both a limited number of Occupational Therapists as well as a limit on the resources available. This can sometimes mean that you may have to wait for the service. We also have a duty to provide the most cost effective services to meet your needs, so sometimes this may mean we cannot always provide the services you would like.
What services may be provided?

Services may include:
  • An assessment of your ability and needs.
  • Advice and training on managing the practical difficulties caused by disability
  • Advice on the purchase, or short term loan, of equipment to help with daily living and personal care tasks, such as preparing meals, bathing and use of the toilet. More expensive items are sometimes loaned by Social Services.
  • Minor adaptations to the home, such as grab rails, stair rails and small ramps
  • Advice and assistance with major adaptation work, such as lifts, bathrooms and showers. This might include advice about applying for financial grants.
  • Information on local and national organisations who provide further services.

Is there a charge for any part of the service?


There is no charge for the assessment or for advice/information.

What do I do now?

If you feel you need occupational therapy services in order to live independently at home, please contact the Duty Team Help Desk (details below). If you prefer you can ask someone else, such as a friend, relative or your GP, to make contact for you.

Confidentiality


All information that is given to staff while they are making an assessment is treated as confidential and is only passed on with the person’s agreement, except in children protection cases or where illegal situations have been disclosed.

Information is stored on the directorate’s central computer system and within paper files as part of our client record system and only authorised staff have access to it. Anyone whose personal details are recorded can ask to see them.
