What is adult abuse?

Who is a vulnerable adult?
A vulnerable adult is a person aged 18 years or over who may be unable to take care of themselves, or protect themselves from harm or from being exploited. This may be because they have a mental health problem, a disability, a sensory impairment, are old and frail, or have some form of illness.

Where can I get advice/assistance from as a Carer?
From a Care Manager at Adult Services who can be contacted at St Thomas Chambers147 High Street Newport Isle of Wight PO30 1TY Tel: 01983 823340 or from Carers UK, they can advice on benefits, having a break from caring, which can include respite care, day care, support groups, homecare packages to help with personal care and emotional support.

What do you do if you are being abused or you suspect that someone you know may be the victim of abuse?
If you are being abused or are concerned about someone you know, it is very important to tell someone. Contact the Duty Team Help Desk on 01983 823340 and ask to speak to the duty officer. Whilst you do not have to give your name, it is helpful to have a name and contact number in case we need to contact you. We may need to act on the information you give us and contact other relevant services. If you need assistance outside of normal office hours please phone 01983 821105 - and ask for the Duty Social Worker. If the problem is needing immediate attention (for example the person is at imminent risk of harm), the Police should be called. Either phone 999 or the local police number 0845 454545. You should contact one of the numbers at the foot of this page as soon as possible Your concerns will be taken seriously and will receive prompt attention.

Is it still regarded as abuse if the abuser is known to the victim?
The person who is causing the abuse is very often well known to the abused person and could be for example a carer or volunteer, a health worker or social care worker . It could even be a relative, friend or neighbour . Abuse can be caused by another resident or service user . In some cases it could be a person who sets out to deliberately exploit vulnerable people.

What is adult abuse?
Abuse is mistreatment by any other person or persons that violates a person’s human and civil rights. The abuse can vary from treating someone with disrespect in a way, which significantly affects the person’s quality of life, to causing actual physical suffering.·Abuse can be Physical, Psychological or Emotional, Financial or Material, Neglect, Discriminatory, Institutional. Abuse can happen anywhere – in a residential or nursing home, a hospital, in the workplace, at a day centre or educational establishment, in supported housing or in the street.
