FAQs
What is the Family Resource Service?
Answer: The Family Resource Service provides a range of services for children and young people in need, and their families. These are aimed at preventing family breakdown and supporting families to stay together. Some of the primary issues for referral include improving communication within the family home, improving confidence in parenting skills, support in setting boundaries and behaviour management. In conjunction with our core family work, we offer targeted groups, such as educational classes and confident parenting groups. Check the “Targeted Groups” link on the left for up to date information on classes and groups.
We receive referrals for Early Years Outreach work, which covers under five years; this provides practical support in parenting, such as advice about appropriate play and stimulation, behaviour management, diet and nutrition, managing household affairs and developing support networks.
We have recently developed our services to be able to receive referrals for specific One to One sessions for children and young people aged between 7 and 16, in order to address issues such as social isolation, low self esteem, bullying, challenging patterns of behaviour and inappropriate peer circles.
How do we work with families?
Answer: Our core family work involves meeting and working with the whole family together. This is because we believe that everyone has a role to play in making the changes.
What do the Family Resource workers do?
Answer: Family Resource workers are trained to work with families, using a Solution Oriented approach. The workers provide support to the family to enable them to find their own solutions to the situations they are experiencing.
How long do you work with the families?
Answer: The Family Resource Service will work with families for between 6 – 8 sessions. We then undertake a review to access what other work might be required to meet the families’ needs. Some families may find that one or two sessions are all they need, while others find a few more useful.
How long do the sessions last?
Answer: The sessions are generally last for about an hour and we advise on weekly sessions.
How can I be referred to the Family Resource Service?
Answer: If your already have an allocated Social Worker, you should discuss with them the possibility of a referral. If you do not have a Social Worker, and you think your family would benefit from this service, you should contact the Referral and Assessment Team during normal office hours on (01983) 525790 and discuss this with the Duty Social Worker.

Related Link What will happen if I am told I need to have an Initial Assessment (I.A.)?
Answer: If you contact or, you are referred to Children's Services because of a child related issue, a duty social worker from the Referral and Assessment Team will assess how they might be able to help you. For very simple issues no formal assessment will take place, they will generally offer advice or signposting to a more appropriate service. If you have more problematic issues, then an assessment of need may need to take place in order to be able to develop a plan of how we can best help you. The name of this process is an initial assessment. This is done for the sole reason of establishing the most effective way to support you and your family.
