Assessments
Assessment is about understanding your children’s needs and coming to decisions with you about how your child might best be helped.
The Government wants social care agencies nationally, to undertake assessments in the same way. ‘The Framework for the Assessment of Children in Need and Their Families’ ensures that all professionals involved with your child/children work together, co-operatively, in the assessment process with you. Most of these assessments will be co-ordinated and completed by the Children and Families Communities Team but not exclusively. Some may be completed by Looked After Children 0-16 Team, Looked After Children 16+ Team or the Children’s Disability Team.
The assessment concentrates on three main areas:

- The child’s developmental needs, looking at health, education and social needs.
- Parenting capacity, looking at how you care for and relate to your child/children.
- Family and environmental factors, looking at understanding your family circumstances.
The outcome of the assessment may lead to other services being provided, but it may not. What we all want the assessment to do is help us, help you, when you feel the need of extra support by improving outcomes for your child/children.
