The Children’s Disability Register 

WHAT IS THE REGISTER

One of the requirements of the Children Act 1989 which came into force in October 1991,is to compile a register of children with disabilities. The aim of this is to ensure that Social Services, Health and Education Departments give greater priority to supporting children with disabilities and their families, and to help the above agencies with planning and co-ordinating services.

WHO CAN GO ON THE REGISTER?

New registrations will be added up to the nineteenth birthday. Only those children and young people whose disability has a marked influence on their everyday life will be able to be included on the register.

Disability includes physical conditions which are either permanent or require lengthy
treatment. These may affect sight, hearing and speech. Some learning and behavioural conditions may also be included.

WHAT INFORMATION WILL BE INCLUDED?

Your child’s:-
  • Name, address and age
  • Type of disability
  • Family doctor and school

WHO WILL HAVE ACCESS TO THIS INFORMATION?

This information with be shared with the Children’s Disability Service Manager, the
Assistant Education Officer and SN Health Visitor.

The decision to register is yours. Your decision will not affect your right to make use of Social Services facilities.

It is hoped that as many parents as possible will agree to the registration of their children to ensure that future planning will be as accurate as possible.

REGISTER OF CHILDREN WITH DISABILITIES

A copy of the information will be sent to you when you register, thereafter, every twelve months whenever updates are made.

BENEFITS OF REGISTRATION

  • You will receive up to the date information about the services available in your area, for example local groups. However, being placed on the register does not itself mean you will automatically be entitled to services, as all requests are considered and assessed individually.
  • Knowing the total number of children with disabilities in each area will help Social Services, Education and Health to plan more appropriately for their needs.

WHAT DO YOU NEED TO DO?

You can get more information about the register and any services which may be available to you and your child at Oak House or the Children’s Service Centre (Tel. 525790) or from any of the Health or Education professionals who may be involved with your family.
