Collecting Your Waste![]() Weekly collectionsThe Isle of Wight Council works in partnership with Island Waste Services to provide a weekly collection of household waste to over 64,500 properties across the Island. A “back door” collection service is provided, however, if you prefer to put your waste out on the kerbside for collection, please do so by 7am on the day of collection. The Council does not provide wheelie bins, dustbins or bin bags. It is the responsibility of the householder to provide proper containment of their waste prior to collection. Our contractors’ refuse collection vehicles are not able to lift wheelie bins and it is strongly recommended that you contact Island Waste if you are thinking about buying a wheelie bin. The collection crews will not take the following:
Sharp objects such as broken glass and kitchen knives should not be placed loose in your bin bag as they may injure the collection staff. Please wrap these objects in newspaper and if at all possible place them in a separate bag clearly labelled to advise the collection staff and prevent injury. Island Waste use a fleet of 9 refuse collection vehicles including one smaller vehicle for rural lanes. The vehicles are split bodied. General waste is loaded at the rear of the vehicle and organic and garden waste are loaded into the green compartment on the side of the vehicle. The fleet was replaced this year with new vehicles. Last year over 37,000 tonnes of domestic waste were collected on the domestic rounds. This waste collected is taken to the Resource Recovery Facility. The Isle of Wight Council does not collect business/trade waste and it is illegal for such waste to be placed out for collection with the domestic waste. |
