Museum of Island History


The Museum of Island History will now only be open on Tuesdays and Thursdays
(10.30am – 4pm).

The museum will close at 3.00pm on Thursday 9 February 2012 for development training.

Welcome to the Museum of Island History. Located in Newport’s historic Guildhall, the
museum explores the history of the Isle of Wight from the time of the dinosaurs to the
present day.

The museum contains touch screen computers, microscopes and hands-on exhibits.

The museum has a small gallery where temporary exhibitions are held.

The museum is open all year round. It provides something for all the family. The displays are divided into three main sections, Always an Island, Taming the Island and Peopling the Island.

Discover the process of fossilisation and touch real fossils. Touch screen computers illustrate the history of the island. Microscopes can be used to observe a range of small artefacts in incredible detail.

The gallery houses temporary exhibitions, which explore aspects of the island and its history. This allows the museum service to display objects from its collections, which are not on permanent display.
