We will work together so that Island children:
  • Are healthy safe and well cared for;
  • Do well at preschool and school;
  • Are valued equally;
  • Are part of a caring family and social circle of friends;
  • Live in a crime free community;
  • Have a secure income and home as part of a family or as an individual, and
  • Become independent and able to make choices.

Services for children and families

Children and Family Services as part of the Children’s Services Directorate aims to help vulnerable children and families in need. The Council has a duty to protect children from neglect or abuse, and to help families who are experiencing difficulties looking after their children at home. The Council can also open the way to a range of care, education and health services.

Our Progress

In 2004 David Pettitt was appointed as the Director of Children’s Services, together with Jill Wareham as lead Elected Member and Portfolio Holder for children. This was followed by the launch of the new Directorate in autumn, and the appointment of Prue Grimshaw as Head of Children & Family Services. The Island has a Local Preventative Strategy which is the “blue print” for our progressing integrated working across Children’s Services and can be accessed (link) The Directorate plans to have a Children’s Trust in place by 2006.
