Isle of Wight Fostering Service

The Isle of Wight Fostering service is always looking for new families to add to the number of approved foster carers who are experienced in looking after vulnerable children in differing circumstances which includes long term fostering, short term fostering, respite care, daycare and family link.

If you would like to talk to someone about fostering then please contact the fostering and adoption team at Ryde Social Services on 01983 566011. We will be happy to hear from you. You can be single, married, with and without children, grandparent in or out of work.

Long term fostering involves carers who are committed to looking after children as they progress through childhood, ensuring they lead a normal life as is possible when separated from their birth families. The expectation is the foster child becomes part of the family and is owned by the carers. At the same time, the carer is expected to work in partnership with professionals involved such as health, education and psychology, with the individual child in order to enhance the quality of life for that child. Carers will need to support the young person having contact with his/her family.

Short term fostering is about caring for a child with the knowledge that the child will move on, either back to their birth family, or to alternative placements such as adoption or a long term placement. During this period, it is common for professionals to be working closely together in order to complete a clear holistic assessment of the child. The foster carers input is a valuable source of information during this time and can be time consuming.

Respite care offers a service both to long term foster carers and birth families who require a break from caring for a child/young person.

Day care providers offer daycare to carers whose foster children may not be in education and therefore require adult supervision during the day. Foster carers are not paid a wage, but a daily allowance.

Family Link is a specialised service for families who have a child with a disability or life threatening illness. This service provides carers to care for the child in order to give the family a break from the demands of differing disabilities.

All foster families are carefully chosen, assessed and trained by a qualified Social Worker in the Fostering and Adoption Team. They are then approved by a special panel whose recommendations are considered by the Head of Children and Family Services.

Foster care allowances are regularly updated and a training incentive payment is also considered annually as a lump sum payment.

If you believe you are the type of person and/or family who can offer a home to a foster child/children then please contact the Fostering and adoption team at Ryde Social Services on 01983 566011 or write to us at the Fostering and Adoption team, Ryde Social Services Centre, Ryde town Hall, Lind Street, Ryde, Isle of Wight, PO33 2NQ.
