Kerbside refuse collections

From 12 April 2010 the way your rubbish is collected will change

We are switching to a fully kerbside collection for increased efficiency. This means that residents must now place their waste and recycling out on the kerbside for collection by 7.00am on the morning of their normal collection day. This is in line with the service offered by councils across the UK. Booklets detailing the changes to the service will be delivered to residents with the April Beacon magazine.

You can download a copy of the leaflet using the links below:

Key Changes

  • Rubbish now needs to be kerbside for collection
  • Kitchen waste now needs to be kerbside for collection
  • Garden waste sacks now needs to be kerbside for collection (N.B. this is a chargeable service, please use Island waste sacks only)
  • More types of paper can be recycled in the black box
  • Black recycling box now needs to be kerbside for collection

What you should do

  • Ensure your waste is kerbside by 7am on the morning of collection day
  • Securely store waste prior to collection
  • Do not put waste kerbside before 6pm the night before your collection day.

Exceptions

  • Properties on the rural collection round are not affected by these changes. (Click here to check if you are on the rural collection round – not all properties on each area are included, please contact us to confirm)
  • Bulk collections from large wheelie bins hired from Island Waste are not affected by these changes.
  • Waste which is currently collected from properties with shared, designated, and accessible bin store areas (e.g. flats, and shared occupancy buildings) will see no change in service

N.B. During the first week of operation (12 April) it will not be possible for collection crews to return to properties that have either not presented their waste or recycling correctly, or are not aware of the change in service. If waste is not collected during this week, residents should get in touch with the council’s waste team, as it may have been placed in the wrong location.

What is kerbside

The location of kerbside is generally defined as the location where the pavement meets the road, as in example 1.

For other circumstances which confuse this, please refer to these other examples for the correct location to leave your waste. If you are still unsure please get in touch. We may conduct a site visit to identify the correct collection location.

Unadopted roads: If the unadopted road is too narrow for the refuse vehicle, waste should be placed kerbside at the nearest accessible point – this may be a wider section of the unadopted road, or the main highway.
Shared bin stores: Properties with shared, designated, and accessible bin store areas (e.g. flats, and shared occupancy buildings) will see no change in service.
