Welcome to the Health, Safety & Welfare Assistance Section

The Health, Safety & Welfare Assistance Section provides competent health and safety advice for employees, councillors and recognised trade unions.

The range of work that can be carried out by the Health, Safety & Welfare Assistance section includes:
  • Answering health and safety related questions.
  • Carry out health and safety advisory visits.
  • Carry out health and safety audits.
  • Respond to health and safety complaints.
  • Monitor accident reports.
  • Carry out accident, injuries, diseases and dangerous occurrences investigations.
  • Investigate near misses.
  • Monitor violence and aggression reports and carry out investigations.
  • Receiving accident reports relating to employees, school pupils, residents, youth club members and members of the public; and advising on the necessity to report to the Health and Safety Executive certain accidents, injuries, diseases and dangerous occurrences.
  • Receive and interpret new and revised legislation, codes of practice, guidance notes and other official documents.
  • Attending committee meetings, governor meetings and school safety committees.
  • Develop policies and internal procedures providing the framework for the safety management structure.
  • Respond to safety representative enquiries, receiving and making comment upon inspection forms.
  • Maintain regular contact with Health & Safety Liaison Officers (HSLO) co-ordinating group meetings when considered necessary.
  • Respond to members of the public where concerns are expressed in relation to council land, property or activities.
  • Maintain a database of accident statistics

ACCIDENT REPORTING GUIDANCE
To assist managers and staff as to what requires a report to the Health, Safety and Welfare Section, a new Flowchart has been developed and is available through the following link:

In 2011/12 the Accident and Incident Report forms - HS2.02A and HS2.02B – will be made available in an electronic format and we will update all staff through The Vine when these are available for general use

HEALTH, SAFETY AND WELFARE SECTION LOCATION
the team moved offices in August 2011, although we are still based at County Hall. We are now located in Room 135 on the 1st Floor and co-located with the rest of the Human Resources team; all other contact details remain unchanged
