Mr Alan Wells

Welcome to My Website

Alan WellsWelcome to my website. I was delighted and honoured to be elected to serve the people of Cowes Castle East Ward. Following my election in May 2005 I was appointed to the role of one of the two Cabinet Secretaries alongside my colleague Cllr David Pugh. This proved to be a challenging and exciting post.

Subsequent to this, in September 2007 after a change in political leadership, I was appointed Cabinet Member for Children and Young People. To take on this role as we are about to embark on a major structural change of the way we organise education on the Isle of Wight (a structure that has not been altered since 1970) is an immense opportunity and role that I am enjoying greatly.

Please feel free to contact me at any of the contact points shown below on any issue that concerns you within the ward or under my Cabinet responsibility and I will do my best to help.

Biography:I have lived on the Island since 1972 and in Cowes since 1978. I also spent 9 years of my early childhood living in Niton so in all the majority of life has been here on the Island.

In 1972 my late father and two of my brothers started a business in Niton which I joined a few years later. In those days there were just 6 people working in the business manufacturing wood burning stoves. When I retired from the family firm, A.J.Wells & Sons Ltd two and a half years ago, the number of employees had jumped to over 100 and the company was one of the largest UK manufacturers of wood stoves. It had also diversified and a number of associated companies had grown up around the original.

I left the business to make way for a younger management team to take on the responsibilities and it allowed me to devote more time to local community issues where I was becoming more and more involved. For two years I had the privilege of serving as Mayor of Cowes, a role that I have greatly enjoyed and which I completed in June 2005.

I am happily married with 5 children all of whom grew up and were educated in Cowes. I also have 5 grandchildren. I am involved in a number of local and Island community organisations including the YMCA Fairthorne Group (which covers the Isle of Wight) of which I am a director. I am also active in the local church community in Cowes.
