New Dog Control Orders

The Isle of Wight Council has passed new Dog Control Orders under section 55 of the Clean Neighbourhoods and Environment Act 2005 to replace existing legislation. The new Dog Orders will come into force from 2 May 2008.

The new Dog Orders apply to access land on the island within the meaning of the Countryside Rights of Way Act 2000. Copies of the areas may be inspected online at www.countrysideaccess.gov.uk

The new Dog Control Orders will provide enforcement powers for the following three offences:

1. It will be an offence if a person in charge of a dog(s) to allow it/them to enter a number of Council owned beaches on the Island during the period of the 1 May to the 30 September.

2. It will be an offence if a person in charge of a dog(s) fails to remove faeces from any land to which the public have access forthwith.

3. It will be an offence if a person in charge of a dog(s) fails to keep it/them on a lead on each and every length of road including adjacent pavements and verges, within the administrative area of the Isle of Wight Council.
