July 2006![]() In
July, Ryde Development Trust’s nine-day “arts-for-all”
event encouraged groups of promoters, performers, poets, photographers,
musicians, artists, schools, community groups and art experts to join
together to produce an extraordinary blend of creative skills and knowledge.
One of the main highlights of the weekend programme was the spectacular Arts Festival Parade, where vibrant displays of costumes all adhering to the theme “Let’s Celebrate” set the tone for the start of Ryde Arts Festival. The picturesque sands of Ryde’s Appley Beach took centre stage in July when they played host to ITV’s annual Meridian Sandcastle Competition. One of the South’s longest-serving broadcasters; popular news presenter Fred Dinenage was accompanied on Appley Beach by camera crews to capture the sandcastle designs which ranged from innovative recreations of movie stars, sculptures of sharks, crocodiles and butterflies along with the more traditional castles and fortresses. July also saw ten thousand fans making their way to Osborne House to be
wowed by Irish boy band and chart topping super-group Westlife. The band,
who have taken both the United Kingdom and Ireland by storm by clocking up
a record-breaking 14 number 1 singles since they were first established in
1999. They played live at the outdoor concert on the magnificent Durbar Lawn
at Osborne House – the former royal residence of her majesty Queen Victoria.
