May 2006

Images from May 2006 We began writing articles for our Events of the Year section here on iwight.com back in May when we witnessed community spirit outshining those targets achieved in previous years for the annual Walk the Wight charity event in aid of the Island’s Earl Mountbatten Hospice.

5211 people joined the mass expedition across the full length of the Island’s countryside, from Bembridge Airport to Album Bay; making it the largest Walk the Wight ever. In light of the record turnout the Earl Mountbatten Hospice, which is the only hospice on the Island to care for 75% of all cancer patients and several other patients with life-shortening diseases raised over £190,000 in sponsorship and donations.

The month of May also witnessed St Thomas’ Square in Newport played host to the Island’s very own Cultural Diversity Day, which was staged to raise awareness of the diverse cultural heritage of our local community. Onlookers in the town centre were treated to a wide variety of local talent throughout the course of the day with demonstrations from Irish dancers, Morris dancers, Salsa dancers and belly dancers as well as music from The Tin Lids, African drummers, Raw Samba and a Scottish Piper to name just a few.
