October & November 2006
 The
10th anniversary of White Air was deemed a huge success In October when more
than 20,000 spectators and competitors flocked to the Island in a bid to position
themselves right at the heart of the action. The four-day event is one of
the largest in the world that is dedicated to extreme sports on land, on sea
and in the air and is held annually in Yaverland. With its routes based firmly
in wind and surf-based challenges, Wight Air has rapidly expanded to become
one of the most prestigious international festivals in the sporting calendar,
so much so that next year the event will take on responsibility for hosting
the World Windsurfing Championships; featuring 100 racers from 40 countries.
October also became witness to hundreds of Islanders adorning items of pink
for one day in a bid to raise money for research into breast cancer. The 'Wear
it pink’ Day theme was adopted by groups of people working throughout
local organisations, businesses and schools. It was fun and simple way to
raise funds for Breast Cancer Awareness - it didn't matter whether it was
a pink tie or scarf that was worn for the day or a full scale pink fluffy
bear outfit; the £2 donation collected from all of those who took part
was put towards helping to research the all-important cure for this dilapidating
disease.
Finally in November, the Island fell silent for two minutes to remember all
those brave Service men and women who have given their lives for the peace
and freedom we enjoy today. Several services of remembrance took place to
remember those who served the nation during times of war. With so many British
troops currently serving in Iraq and Afghanistan we are all aware of the cost
of modern conflict and November 11th certainly proved how important it is
to take time to reflect upon it.
What a year it has been! With such a varied collection of world-class sporting,
music and charitable events succeeding in placing the Island
on firmly on the map, it’s no wonder we await 2007 with great anticipation!
