September 2006
 The world’s
fastest air race returned to the Isle of Wight September when the 75th Anniversary
Schneider Cup touched down at Bembridge Airport. The racing extravaganza was
visible from locations across the Island and in Portsmouth. 50 enthusiastic
pilots plus navigators from across the globe chose to compete aboard a range
of aircrafts including trainers, single seat racers, classic tourers, executive
twins, homebuilts, seaplanes and war-birds racing at speeds between 100-250mph.
Robin Hill Countryside Adventure Park took on a revolutionary new spin over
the weekend of the 8th-10th September when it became the sight of ‘boutique
festival fun and frolics’ in hosting the last UK festival of 2006. The
Bestival was the second largest music festival (following June’s Isle
of Wight Festival) to be held on the Island and this year it boasted a musical
mix of bands and DJ’s spanning a period of decades so wide; festival-goers
were quite literally spoilt for choice. Famous named acts included Lily Allen,
The Pet Shop Boys and hugely popular American band The Scissor Sisters who
were celebrating their most recent single reaching No.1 in the UK charts on
that very day. If all of this wasn’t enough, this year’s Bestival
also broke the world record for the most people to be wearing fancy-dress
in one place in the whole world… ever!
The Isle of Wight Council was once again proud to be hosting a series of
activities this September, all of which combined together to form the Island’s
Ultimate Cycling Event – the annual Isle of Wight Cycling Festival.
For 2006 the nine-day festival followed a ‘gourmet cycling theme.’
Many of the chosen routes were intended to lead enthusiastic cyclists via
some great pubs and stunning tearooms, allowing them to take in some of the
Island’s finest local food and drink along the way.
