The 75th Round the Island Race
| Professional crews, corporate teams and amateurs all joined forces
to take part in one of the world’s largest and most famous yacht
races on Saturday 3rd June.
The hottest day of the year so far played witness to one of the sailing
calendar’s most prestigious events; the Round the Island Race.
|
 |
Altogether 1,587 boats took part in what is in actual fact the country’s
largest yachting race. A lack of wind throughout the course of the day meant
that less than half of the entrants managed to complete the 50-mile course
before the 2200 time limit, but irrespective of this, organisers proclaimed
it a very successful event.
‘Rosina of Beauleiu’ was the overall winner of this year’s
JP Morgan Asset Management Round the Island Race and the crew were subsequently
awarded with the legendary Gold Roman Bowl for their achievement. This
was the third time that yacht designer Jeremy Rogers has won the trophy
and even he described the race as being “very testing.”
 |
Other participants of the event included famed round-the-world sailors Dame
Ellen MacArthur and Sir Robin Knox-Johnston along with Dee Caffari
who recently became the first woman to circumnavigate the globe solo,
non-stop ‘the wrong way.’ The starting point for the Round
the Island Race was the distinguished Royal Yacht Squadron line in
Cowes from which Cowes-based sailor Shirley Robertson fired the first
gun.
Also competing in the 75th Round the Island Race were crews from four Isle of
Wight High Schools and the Isle of Wight College who were taking part
in the Inspire
High School Challenge. This dynamic undertaking was run
by the IW Economic Partnership and funded by SEEDA’s Enterprise
Insight Team – which was launched to develop the |
personal and business skills of young people by championing their own boat.
Cowes High school crossed the finishing line first to walk away with the
title for the second year running, with the Isle of Wight college claiming
second place.
