Walk the Wight - Related LinksA large number of different people and organisations work hard to ensure the success of Walk the Wight every year:
Walk the Wight
The Walk the Wight Committee worked tirelessly throughout the year to ensure the success of the walk. The Earl Mountbatten HospiceThe Earl Mountbatten Hospice volunteers helped throughout the day. Isle of Wight Walking FestivalWalk the Wight takes place during the annual Walking Festival. HF HolidaysHF Holidays provide the walkers numbers and checkpoint booklets, plus schools Walk the Wight t-shirts as well as allowing their beautiful facilities to be used in Freshwater Bay as a checkpoint. The walk was originally started in 1991 by Frank Stephens and the late Bill Bradley who worked for Moreys. Moreys are still one of the walk's main sponsors and provide all the lorries and man power that distribute all the water, tables and chairs to all six checkpoints then work throughout the day clearing up the tons of litter that have to be taken away. Red Funnel FerriesRed Funnel contribute towards the printing of the banners and reduce passenger fares from Southampton to enable more people to take part in the event. Southern VectisSouthern Vectis provided 19 buses and drivers completely free of chrage and operated buses to transport walkers from all over the Island all day long; 6am-6pm. IOW Rotary IOW Rotary provided over 200 marshals on the day who were responsible for manning all the checkpoints, traffic lights, car parks etc. Isle of Wight RadioIsle of Wight Radio generated coverage of the walk throughout the day and in the lead up to the event. They also sponsored the medals. TescoTesco sponsored the banners. Southern Water provided all the water for the day. GlaxoSmithKline gave away free lucozade along the route. Mars bars were donated by Toolbank. St John Ambulance and Millets supplied blister plasters to walkers along the route. Isle of Wight Council's Rights of Way Department The Rights of Way department headed by Lee Skinner helped with placing all the signs for the flat walk and removed stiles and opened gates on the main walk. Dempsey's & Lux provided 8 sets of traffic lights, cones, signs and barriers free of charge throughout the route. Brandon Tool Hire provided all the barriers and generators. The Riverbank Veterinary Hospital checked all the dogs taking part in the walk, first at the start and again at the finish. The Needles Park and Thompson's Trees, Shide The Needles Park and Thompson's Trees provided the facilities for a wonderful finish to both the main walk and the flat walk. Britten Norman, Mr Dungey and the National Trust Britten Norman, Mr Dungey and the National Trust allowed event participants to walk over their land. Carisbrooke Priory once again allowed walkers to use their facilities including a field for parking cars. Vectis Sunrise Rotary provided refreshments at Carisbrooke and Merstone.
The Walk the Wight Committee would also like to extend their thanks to the Isle of Wight Round Table and Sandown and Newport Lions who helped throughout the day. |
