National award for Island based SP

By our industrial correspondent

image of SP receiving awardIt was announced on Nov. 26 2004 that SP had been named as Business of the Year by the British Chambers of Commerce (BCC), beating off strong competition from businesses across the UK. The development of advanced composites for the automotive, marine and wind energy industries has made the Island based company a major force in a growing global market.

David Frost, Director General of the British Chambers of Commerce (BCC), said, "SP are a real credit to UK business, a company that is using ground breaking technology across a range of products to become a market leader. It is not often that a firm can claim to have introduced a revolutionary new product, but for SP to have done this and backed it with marketing and sales is exceptional and demonstrates all the elements of good business."

With headquarters in the UK and further operations in Australia, North America and Spain, SP has 25 years of composites experience in the marine, automotive and wind energy industries. SP’s products include heavyweight structural prepregs, liquid epoxies for infusion and laminating, structural paste and film adhesives, dry reinforcements, core materials and extensive structural design and process engineering services. SP is part of Gurit Composite Technologies, a group of companies who offer a range of composite products and services to their key markets.

SP employs 500 people on the Isle of Wight. The company supplies 50 per cent of composites used by the European wind energy sector.

Sustainable development

On the same day - Nov. 26 - staff at SP found out that they had been awarded the winning place in the South East England Development Agency (SEEDA), Sustainable Business Awards, in the large company category. Through the Awards, SEEDA challenges businesses throughout the South East to embrace sustainability as a tool to secure social and economic objectives including enhanced competitiveness, greater innovation and greater consciousness of environmental issues.

The judging panel were impressed by the extent to which SP has enhanced its business processes to simplify production and embraced new design techniques and products to reduce material wastage and reduce emissions while simultaneously improving health and safety standards.
