SPEED limits of 20mph could be introduced outside every Island school in a new IW Council initiative.
This week's budget included a £200,000 sum to begin an Island-wide programme that will see the speed restrictions put in place wherever it is legal to do so.
In many cases, the speed limits will be accompanying by traffic calming measures to ensure they are complied with.
The measures come on top of money found for other road safety schemes in the budget. Last week it was announced that £1.65 million was being made available to fund anti-skid work and the installation of reactive speed signs.
IW Council leader Andy Sutton said:
"The need to protect our young people is obvious. We are confident these measures will provide a safer environment for our school children. If children grow up with the concept of safe speed then hopefully it is something that will stay with them as they become old enough to drive a car."
