Press Release

SUCCESSFUL CYCLE MAINTANENCE SCHEME TO EXPAND Date Published: 20/03/2009 Expires: 20/04/2009

This Press Release has expired.

A Ryde based scheme that provides training on bicycle maintenance and safety to children and young people has proved so successful that a second group is being set up in Newport.

Isle of Wight Council Environment and Neighbourhood Officer Linda Shorter originally came up with the idea of 'Cycle Ryde' after speaking to residents and seeing young people riding bicycles that didn't appear to be in good working order, and also seeing people ride on pavements.

The first Cycle Ryde, which was held during February, has proved so popular that a new four week course will now be held in the town from 28 April at Ryde Youth Club between 1600 - 1700. It is open to young people in year's 7, 8 and 9 in Ryde.

Participants will be shown how to build their own bikes, make improvements and repairs such as punctures, and be taken on a guided ride. Those who don't have their own bicycles will be donated an old bike to repair from Wight Cycle Hire.

The new group in Newport, called 'Newport Primary Riders', will start on 11 May at Nineacres Primary School and will take place over four weeks. It is open to primary school children and their families and each session will be held between 1600 - 1700.

Both courses are completely free of charge.

Isle of Wight Council Cabinet member for Children and Young People Alan Wells said "I am delighted such a worthwhile and important scheme has proved so popular that it has now been extended into a second town. The scheme not only provides young people with important skills and knowledge, but also provides physical activities and I am sure both forthcoming schemes will provide just as, if not more popular than the first event'.

More details on either scheme in Ryde or Newport can be obtained by emailing Linda Shorter at linda.shorter@iow.gov.uk or by ringing (01983) 550980.
