DATABASES

Databases00
Shanklin Village

There are now two searchable databases available online.

PAUPER LISTS

This database records the names of those who received relief from the Poor Law Union during 1868 and 1875. Their name is listed, as well as their place of residence and age. You can search by date, parish or surname

Returns actually survive for the years 1867, 1868, 1869, 1870, 1871, 1872, 1873, 1874, 1875, 1882, but as yet, only returns for two years are available online.

The original lists record the reason for relief and the total amount received. They are arranged by Poor Law District and within each District alphabetically by parish. In urban areas the residence details are given to street level, elsewhere the names of hamlets, farms or villages appear. If you locate an individual in the database and require further details, please contact us.

ALEHOUSE LICENCES

This database records details of licences issued at the Newport Borough Quarter Sessions between 1766 – 1819. It records the name of the alehouse, the victualler and the sureties (ie. those who stood as security for the proper performance of the victualler’s duties). You can search the licences by year.

We hope to add further databases at a future date. These will include apprenticeship indentures (1689 – 1835), shipping registers (1786 – 1930), indictments (1768 – 1836), sacrament certificates (1673 – 1827). In the meantime, you are welcome to contact us to ask us to search these indexes on your behalf.
