TYPES OF RECORDS

Listed below are the main types of records held by the Record Office. These are: Business, Estate, Hospital and Workhouse, Local Government, Organisations and Societies, Non-Conformist Records and Registers, Parish Records and Registers, Prisons, Quarter and Petty Session plus Schools and Education.

Catalogues are available for all of these types of Record in the Record Office search room at Hillside. For example our Estate collection would include catalogues of the deposited records of both the Oglander and Worsley families. Our parish collection comprises catalogues for each island parish and would include details of all the surviving baptism, marriage and burial registers from 1539 together with other documents such as those relating to Poor Relief and churchwardens accounts.

We are currently updating our web site to include all of our catalogues some pages are still in the process of construction and therefore full catalogues are not yet available for every type of record.

The menu on the left hand side of this page lists further topics such as Electoral Registers and Directories. To access lists of the covering dates for a topic please select the relevant subject from the menu. As with our main types of records these pages are currently being updated and full lists are not yet available for every subject.

Many of the catalogues of the Isle of Wight Record Office can be viewed on line by visiting the Access to Archives database. This gives details of archives held throughout England, dating from the 900s to the present date.

Details of records held by the Office can also be found by consulting the National Register of Archives.
