ISLE OF WIGHT RECORD OFFICE

introduction00
Speed's Atlas 1627

The Record Office preserves historical documents relating to the Isle of Wight and makes them available to the public for research. Our collections date from the 12th century to the present day, and include parish registers of baptisms, marriages and burials, local government archives, school log books and admission registers, maps, newspapers, census returns, as well as prints and photographs of local towns and villages.

You can use the collections to research your FAMILY HISTORY, HOUSE HISTORY, LOCAL HISTORY and EDUCATIONAL PROJECTS. Anyone is welcome to visit the Office and there is no charge for consulting the records.

  • An appointment is only necessary if you wish to consult material on microfilm. Documents held in this format include census returns, parish registers and the I.W. County Press (local newspaper). Online forms are available for booking a microfilm viewer or printer. You can also make a booking by 'phone, email or letter.
  • It is possible to order documents in advance of your visit by completing an online form. You must, however, know the reference numbers; many of these can be obtained from our online catalogues.
  • We are always pleased to accept records of historical interest either as donations or deposits.
