Local Development Scheme

Update – July 2008

As a result of the recently published Planning Policy Statement 12, we will be reviewing the Local Development Scheme which will be available to view here by the end of the year. All documents other than the Core Strategy will be revised to take account of the new consultation process. However, the adoption and publication dates should remain the same. The Core Strategy will continue to progress with consultation, examination and adoption deadlines remaining unchanged.

However, until we are in a position to formally announce agreed revisions, please treat the current Local Development Scheme as the agreed one for the Island Plan, but be mindful of the fact that changes will occur.

Update – July 2007

In June 2007, the Council reviewed its Local Development Scheme (LDS) which sets out the timetable for producing the Island Plan and details the documents that will be produced. The timetable can be found as Appendix 1 and more details can be found in Appendix 2. Further information can also be found here.

Background to changes to the Planning Policy process

The Government has set in motion changes to the planning policy process, which will see the Unitary Development Plan replaced by a Local Development Framework. The new system came into force (under the Planning and Compulsory Purchase Act 2004), as of 28 September 2004.

The existing system of producing development plans is seen to be too slow and inflexible and, in order to speed up the process and raise public awareness of the importance of planning, changes are afoot.

If you wish to be kept up-to-date about development of the Island Plan, you can register on-line to receive information, by sending your details to: planning.policy@iow.gov.uk

The existing document, the Unitary Development Plan (UDP), will be replaced by a framework of documents including:

It will be called the ISLAND PLAN

It will be supported by a series of background and research reports:

Also available to download is the 2005/2006 Annual Monitoring Report

The Shoreline Management Plan (SMP1) has also been used as a background paper to developing the Island Plan. We have split this into two documents: Chapters 1-5 and Chapters 6-10.
