Supporting People is a central government programme introduced in April 2003 by the Department of Local Government and Communities (DCLG) to fund housing-related support services. This is done in partnership with local housing authorities, probation, health, registered social landlords and the voluntary and private sectors.

What is Housing Related Support?


The housing-related support services that Supporting People pay for are aimed at helping people live independently in their homes. It includes things such as:
  • Assisting people with the security of their homes
  • Assisting people with personal safety in their homes
  • Assisting people with managing their money
  • Assisting people with claiming benefits
  • Assisting people with learning domestic and/or social skills
  • Advice on home improvements
  • Assisting people with dealing with other people such as landlords, other tenants and professionals
  • Supporting people with neighbour disputes
  • Support with moving to more independent accommodation

People Who Can Get Housing Related Support:

  • Are homeless;
  • Is an older person;
  • Has a learning or physical disability;
  • Are blind, partially-sighted or hard of hearing;
  • Has a Drug or Alcohol related problem;
  • Suffer from HIV and AIDS;
  • Are people escaping domestic violence;
  • Has recently come out of prison;
  • Is a Teenage parent;
  • Is a young person at risk;
  • Is a traveller, or
  • Has a mental health problem.
