NEWPORT PEDESTRIANISATIONBetween January and May 2002, the Isle of Wight Council undertook an extensive public consultation exercise on the possibility of improving traffic management and pedestrianising sections of Newport High Street. Initially the Council consulted on 4 options (A to D) which included:
The consultation exercise highlighted a number of concerns primarily regarding traffic dispersal to the west of the town and, as a result, the Council developed a 5th option (Option E) The Council received over 1,200 responses to the consultation exercise and reported the findings to the Council’s Environment and Transport Committee on 29th May 2002. The Committee supported Option E but recommended that additional consultation be undertaken with residents of Pyle Street, Crocker Street and Trafalgar Road, before a final decision by the Executive Committee. The Executive Committee considered the issues on 24th September 2002 and decided not to introduce pedestrianisation at this time but to undertake a number of access, pedestrian, safety, bus and traffic improvements Copies of the options, traffic flows, press and committee reports can be downloaded below: If you require further information please contact Charlotte Westwood at charlotte.westwood@iow.gov.uk or telephone (01983) 821000.
