Should you already have an Occupational Therapist or Physiotherapist involved in your care they may refer you instead of your GP. Only standard wheelchairs are provided.

The Wheelchair Service- Should be able to provide you with a wheelchair if you have a permanent and substantial disability with walking which means you are unable to walk indoors without support. You will need to have a permanent address on the Isle of Wight or be considered a resident for health care purposes. Ask your GP to provide a written referral to the service. If you already have an Occupational Therapist, Physiotherapist or other health professional involved in your care they may refer you instead of your GP. Once your referral has been allocated you will be asked to attend a clinic at the Occupational Therapy and Wheelchair service department, based at St Marys Hospital. At the clinic you will have a full assessment of your individual wheelchair needs. Please be aware mobility scooters are not provided by this service.

PRESSURE RELIEF EQUIPMENT

If you require pressure relieving equipment in order to reduce or prevent pressure sores ask your GP to refer you to the District Nursing service. They will be able to assess your needs and when required have access to equipment such as pressure relieving mattresses.

MOBILITY EQUIPMENT

If you are having difficulty mobilising safely around your home or outside a Physiotherapist can make an assessment to find out what will assist you. Where appropriate the physiotherapist will provide walking aids. Ask your GP to refer you to the Physiotherapy service. If you or a family member have recently experienced falls it may also be appropriate to ask your GP to refer you to The Falls Clinic which helps people by providing advice and techniques in order to reduce the risk of falling.

RETURN, REPAIR OR MAINTENANCE OF ISSUED EQUIPMENT

If you have been issued with equipment via the Occupational Therapy service through the Integrated Community Equipment Service and now wish to return it you can contact the store directly. The store will also provide repair and when appropriate replacement of equipment provided. If your needs have changed you will need to re refer to the Occupational Therapy Team for equipment that meets your new needs. For complex electrical or weight bearing items a maintenance schedule is routine. However if you have any concerns regarding the safe functioning of equipment please contact stores directly. The stores are unable to deal with items provided under the Disabled Facilities grant or items which have been privately purchased.
