Pilot Project Regarding Social Inclusion for Young People on the Autistic Spectrum

Aim of the Project:

The aim of this pilot project is to undertake an evaluation of the effectiveness of a type of approach that is aimed at developing skills and strategies which will enable these young people to sustain independently, social opportunities and activities that are within their community.

This project is time limited and will be closely evaluated to determine whether it is an effective model of intervention. It will involve professionals from Health, Education and Social Services.

Identifying the young people:

  • Aged 12 and over.
  • Should have a diagnosis which identifies them as being on the Autistic Spectrum, and not have a significant learning disability. The term ‘high functioning autism’ may be appropriate.
  • A baseline assessment will be required of each young person to identify strengths, weaknesses and areas that require development.

Process:

A baseline social skills assessment will be devised and provided to the potential users of this project. The assessment will draw upon information from all agencies involved with the young person, such as the Communication and Interaction Team, Schools and Community Learning Disability Nurse, Social Worker.

From this assessment, the young people will be identified to participate in this pilot project. In conjunction with the involved professionals, project workers, parents and young person a programme of intervention will be constructed. This will include:

  • specific aims/targets for the young person
  • programme of work to be undertaken to achieve aims/targets, including timescales
  • agreed level of intervention
  • clarification of and agreement covering any ‘risk’ factors
  • review and evaluation of intervention.
