The Coroner

Do not be alarmed if the death is reported to the Coroner - the Coroner is automatically involved in most sudden or unexpected deaths, especially if the deceased had not been under a Doctors care on a regular basis.

In cases where death has been reported to the Coroner, the procedure is somewhat different. First of all, do not forget that the Coroner and his officers are working in your interest. If the death is not due to natural causes (a traffic accident, for instance) the Coroner will hold an Inquest.

This has to determine

  1. the identity of the deceased,
  2. when, where and how the death occurred and
  3. the cause of death.

Your Funeral Director should be able to advise you on other details that give you cause for concern.
