BUILDING CONTROL

Building Control does not exist as an obstacle to your intentions. It is there to safeguard the community against bad practice in building work, public health and safety aspects. These are all aimed at improving the environment in which we live as well as laying the foundation for future generations.

The main function of the Building Control Section is to ensure that new building work meets the requirements of the Building Regulations. These Regulations cover matters such as structural stability, fire safety, conservation of fuel and power and access and facilities for disabled persons. This is achieved by checking and approving plans of proposed works, and then carrying out inspections of the work on site as it proceeds. Building Control is also able to offer general advice on building matters.

We also carry out additional safety roles, such as dealing with demolition works, ensuring adequate means of escape in case of fire from certain buildings containing flats and we are on call to deal with dangerous structures.
