HEDGEROWS

Hedgerows are an important part of the landscape both in towns and in the countryside. The Countryside Section provides a number of different services which involve hedgerows.

If a neighbour’s hedge is too high and is adversely affecting your home, you may be able to complain to the Council under Part 8 of the Anti-social Behaviour Act 2003. If you are successful, the hedge might be reduced in height. See High Hedges for further information.

If a landowner wishes to remove a hedgerow (unless it is in or around the garden of a house) they normally need to notify the Council at least 42 days beforehand, under the Hedgerow Regulations 1997. Hedgelaying is a traditional hedge management method which has benefits for wildlife and landscape. The Countryside Section supports the annual Isle of Wight Hedgelaying Competition and provides information on active hedge layers who work on the Island.
