What is Community Safety?
The importance of community safety has been recognised in the Sustainable Community Strategy ‘Eco Island 2008 – 2020’. The new vision shared by the leading organisations which serve our communities states: ‘We want the Isle of Wight to become a world renowned Eco Island, with a thriving economy and a real sense of pride, where residents and visitors enjoy healthy lives, feel safe and are treated with respect.’

Community safety is not just about tackling crime and disorder. It is about improving our quality of life and reducing the fear of crime. Community safety relates to our sense of personal security and to our feelings of ease in the places where we live, work or spend leisure time. It affects how we value our neighbourhood, and is a major part of what makes a neighbourhood a good or a bad place to live.

The Isle of Wight is a very safe and enjoyable place to live, work and visit. The Isle of Wight Council, the Police and other CDRP partners have worked extremely hard to make an impact on crime levels across the entire Island and has achieved some notable success, with significant reduction in burglary, vehicle crime and criminal damage. The challenge for the forthcoming year will be to build on this success and drive down other types of crime, particularly those of violence and disorder associated with alcohol misuse.
