The Isle of Wight Council’s Sports Development Unit is a small but dedicated team based at the Guildhall in Newport. Working with various partners, the team has a variety of different objectives and aims for sport and physical activity on the Island.

The main objectives of the IOW Council Sports Development Unit are -
  • Increasing numbers participating in sport and physical activity
  • Ensuring young people have access to positive activities and to establish clear performance
pathways for young people
  • Co-ordination, delivery and support of various sports events including the Primary School
Olympics, Hampshire & IOW Youth Games, World Youth Island Games and Island Games
  • Developing and supporting the infrastructure of qualified sports coaches, officials and
Administrators
  • Developing and delivering Talented & Gifted Athlete Initiatives
  • Developing and supporting the Island’s Sports Clubs
  • Supporting health and well being initiatives
  • Offering high quality sports learning and training opportunities and
increasing the number of volunteers in sport
