I’ve spent one year on the IW Youth Council and would like to be re-elected to continue with the work I’ve found to be productive and enjoyable. |

I want to work towards getting an all in one card covering transport, I.D. and with a points and discount system if you access leisure and other facilities. I will work with the council to get more facilities for older teenagers. Most of my friends want places, locally, which are open when we want and are well publicised. I’d also like to make the Isle of Wight Youth Council more open to receiving ideas from more young people and then publicising what it does and what it can do for young people on the Isle of Wight. |

Youth centres and other facilities should be more open to letting young people have their say in how they are run and what activities go on. The biggest issue that young people have expressed to me is having an influence on things that affect them. I, personally, will get involved with Ventnor Town Council and promote others to do the same across the South Wight area and the rest of the Island. We want our say!

The Bay Area needs sports facilities for people of all ages; a multi purpose sports area, near the new skate park in Sandown, would be a great idea. I would want to look at the use of youth centres to get more activities running; older teenagers want different things from younger ones and should be catered for. I, also, want to work to help build a better relationship between young people and the police across the area. I’ll make time and be available to listen to all the young people across the South Wight area.

Being a member of the IWYC has given me many opportunities to help and improve the Island and make it more exciting. New ideas and different chances to meet others of similar interests are a challenge and this year the “rock the Island” talent show, organised by the youth council, did just that. I want to push forward the idea of building a multi use games area in Ventnor town to encourage sports activities among young people. I’d also like to look at the possibility of building a MUGA in Sandown. This could lead to sports tournaments between different towns across the South Wight area. I’d like to see the Student rider extended to all young people under 19, that is, to those who aren’t in education, employment or training and not only students. This will help people to try to find work or access the college and other training opportunities. |

I think that transport to and from school should be free, especially if you aren’t in the 6th form. The 3 mile limit doesn’t work as someone who lives further down the same road from me gets free travel but I have to pay. Older teenagers need somewhere to go with people of their own age group. A youth café would be ideal with internet access and games consoles. The people who would use the café should have their say in designing its layout and what goes on when it’s open. It should offer people opportunities to widen their talents by being able to develop and practise what they’re good at. Dogs shouldn’t be banned from beaches as most of them are under control and their owners pick up after them. It’s the other ones that are a problem and their owners should be fined if they can’t control their dogs and don’t pick up after them. |

Bus services to Niton and other small villages in South Wight need improving with regard to evening services. The last bus to Niton, for example, leaves Newport at 5.40pm which leaves young people stranded in their villages and makes it impossible to go out. We need later evening services on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. I’m training as a web designer and will get an excellent IWYC website up and running. This will enable us to publicise the youth council and to get the views of most of the young people on the Island. We could advertise events and sports, educational and other facilities for young people. I’ll campaign to maintain the Student Rider at £1 and try to get it extended to people who are under 19 and not in education or training. |
