Foster Carer Assessment

Foster Carers come from a variety of backgrounds and different life experiences to meet the diverse needs of the children in our care.

There are, however, several common criteria that is required by our service. In order to become a Foster Carer you must:

  • Be at least 21 years old
  • Have a spare bedroom
  • Be full time resident in the UK
  • To be able to give time and care to a child often on a full time basis

During our assessment we will also consider the following:

  • Health
  • Financial security
  • Your home
  • Your friends and family
  • Your past
  • Your experience with children
  • Skills and Qualities
  • Many of the children / young people who need to live in foster care have been through traumatic experiences. As a result they may feel lonely, afraid or confused.

  As a Foster Carer you will need to:

  • Be able to provide a good standard of care to other people’s children to promote their health, education and leisure interests
  • Be able to listen and communicate with children / young people in a way that is appropriate for their age and understanding
  • Be willing to learn new skills
  • Be able to help the child / young person keep in contact with their family, friends and local community activities as appropriate
  • Be able to put boundaries in place in order to manage behaviour in an effective and positive way to enable children to grow up to be responsible and well balanced adults
  • Have energy and motivation to remain committed to a child through more challenging times
  • Ability to work with and understand the role of all the professionals involved in the child life
  • Have patience, understanding and a sense of humour
  • Be warm and nurturing
  • Be non - judgmental and have a positive attitude to diversity
  • Be a resilient person and able to cope with the extremes of emotions and not easily upset
  • Be a good listener
  • Communicate openly and honestly
  • Be flexible but also capable of setting clear boundaries
  • Express views both verbally and in written form
  • Welcome guidance and support
  • Be solution focused
