The following information will help ensure that your recycling, food waste and rubbish is collected on the right day and to help avoid confusion.

We have also created a YouTube video that provides you with information about the new waste and recycling arrangements on the Isle of Wight. To view the video, please click here.

When to set out your recycling, food waste and rubbish

Recycling and waste must be set out at the kerbside by 7am on the day of your scheduled collection. You may put you recycling or waste out the evening before collection after 7pm.

Recycling and Waste set out late may not be collected and the crew will not return to collect any waste set out late.

Setting out recycling and waste at any other time other than for your scheduled collection can cause an environmental nuisance and is not permitted. If a household repeatedly puts out recycling and waste on the wrong day it will receive a written warning (called a section 46 notice) and may receive a fixed penalty notice for fly tipping.

Personalising your bins and sacks

Wheeled bins:
Householders are encouraged to use stickers or paint to put your house name or number on the wheeled bins. This will help to ensure that your bins are returned to the kerbside in front of your property.

Gull-proof sacks:
Householders are encouraged to use luggage labels or stickers to identify their gull-proof sack with their property name and or number. The crew will where ever possible will use the gull-proof sack handles to secure your gull-proof sacks to your property (by hanging on door handles, gates etc.) or they may fold the sacks and place them under the handle of your large food caddy.

Where to set out your recycling, food waste and rubbish

The council, in partnership with Amey, operate a kerbside collection service. For the majority of households this means the kerbside adjoining the public highway.

Please set out your recycling, food waste and rubbish in the wheeled bins, food caddies or gull-proof sacks provided to your property at the kerbside in front of your property. The collection crew will return your wheeled bins, food caddies or gull-proof sacks to the point where they were presented.

Please avoid making a communal pile of gull-proof sacks as this will make it difficult for the crew to ensure properties have their gull-proof sacks returned to them.

When your recycling or rubbish is not collected

The collection crew endeavour to never miss a recycling, food waste or rubbish collection. The collection crew use state of the art in cab technology to record each street as it completed noting every property that has not set out its recycling, waste or rubbish for collection as well as recording properties that have set out the wrong waste. This system also records recycling and food collection that has not been collected due to contamination from other waste streams, in these cases the crew will put a sticker on your containers to let you know what was wrong.

If your recycling, food or rubbish collection was genuinely missed and has not been logged as incorrect waste type, contaminated or inaccessible (due to locked gates) the collection crew will return to collect it. This must be reported as soon as you are aware and can be done online using the 'Missed Collection' form by clicking here.

If your recycling, food or rubbish collection has been left due to contamination you must take this back onto your property, remove the contaminant and either hold onto it for the next scheduled collection or take it to either Afton Marsh or Lynnbottom recycling centre.

If you recycling, food or rubbish collection has been stickered wrong day because it has been put out on the wrong day, you must take this back onto your property. Waste and Recycling is not permitted to be left out on footpaths or roads as it may cause an environmental nuisance, if left for 48 hours after the 7am set out time this will be investigated as a fly tip and may lead to a fixed penalty notice.
