Your application form will play a very important part in the selection process. These guidance notes have been put together to help you to produce the best application you can.

If you do not hear back from us on this occasion or you are unsuccessful at the interview stage please do not let it deter you from applying for other jobs with us.

Take the time to carefully read these notes along with all the information provided about the job.

The information you provide on your application form will help us to decide whether your skills, abilities, experience, knowledge and qualifications meet the requirements of the job as set out in the Person Specification.

To be short listed you will need to show on your application form how you meet all the essential requirements of the post, or, where we receive a large number of applications for a particular job, how you meet the requirements of the job to the highest level.

Completing the application form

  • It is important that you complete all sections of our application form; curriculum vitae (CV) cannot be accepted as a substitute.

  • We ask that you provide us with your date of birth but this is only used for monitoring purposes not as part of short-listing/selection criteria.

Some other things to remember:

  • If you are short-listed, your referees will be contacted before your interview, unless you have indicated on the form that you do not wish us to contact them at this stage. Please note: that references will be required as part of our pre-employment checks. Check with your referees that they are happy for us to contact them before you name them. This will save time!

  • Try and keep free any interview date mentioned in the advert or other information sent out- we cannot promise to rearrange.

  • Bring along your identity documents and qualification certificates when you come to interview. These will be copied in order to save time if you are appointed.

Safer Recruitment

The council adheres to a robust Safer Recruitment policy.  You should be aware that The Isle of Wight Council undertakes a range of vetting procedures as part of a rigourous recruitment process.  Before any offer of employment is confirmed we need to undertake various checks to ensure your suitability for the post.  These are usually references, but for positions that are classified as ‘restricted’, such as those working with children and adults in education and care, this will include a background check on police records.

General Information

The Isle of Wight stands between Portsmouth and Southampton, divided from the mainland by a strip of water known as the Solent and Spithead. The distance from the mainland is nowhere more than five miles and travel links are maintained by regular services to Portsmouth, Southampton and Lymington.

From east to west, the land measures 25 miles, and 13 miles from north to south. The total area of 146 sq. miles has 532 miles of roads, 514 miles of footpaths and bridleways, and 57 miles of coastline which is a distinct advantage for an Island depending greatly on the tourist industry. The major towns are Newport (population 25,000), Ryde (population (26,100),Cowes (population 19,900), Sandown and Shanklin (population 13,300), and Ventnor (population 5980).

The excellence of the climate is amply illustrated by the regular appearance of Island towns amongst the leaders in national sunshine hours’ tables and the relatively low annual rainfall figures. Winters are generally mild in comparison with the rest of the country. The Island is a place of great beauty with much to cherish, but also needing to continue to modernise and to take maximum advantage of new opportunities. In short it is a place of strong contrasts with unusual challenges and opportunities.
