School Transport

Privilege Seat Scheme

Privilege seats are available for parents/guardians to purchase if their child is not eligible for a free term ticket and would like for them to travel on a contracted school bus service. This information is valid for transport from September 2017.

How to Apply

The first application window has now closed. A second window will open at 9am on Monday 10th July 2017 and close at 4pm on Tuesday 25th July 2017 inclusive. You can only apply for specific bus services and these services will be listed at the bottom of this webpage from Monday 3rd July 2017. Further information on current bus routes can be accessed via the ‘School Bus Routes’ tab above.

Please note: You will only be able to apply for one bus service per application form so if you live in an area which is served by more than one bus service, you will need to make separate applications for each of the services you would like your child to be considered for.

Online

The form will be available between 9am on Monday 10th July 2017 and close at 4pm on Tuesday 25th July 2017 via the 'Do It Online' tab above and is called an ‘Application for a Privilege Seat on School Transport’.

Phone

If you are unable to complete the form yourself you can telephone the Councils’ contact centre for a member of staff to complete the form on your behalf. The phone number can be found under the ‘Contact’ tab, above.

Sixth Form Student Applications

You will not be able to apply before the first half-term of the academic year (October 2017). Confirmation of the application window for sixth form students will be updated nearer the time. Sixth form students would be expected to make their own transport arrangements in the meantime.

How the process works once an application is submitted and received

After the application window closes we shall start the allocation process.

An automated, random-number generator (randomiser) will be used to allocate children to bus services. All submitted applications will have a reference number and will be grouped together by the service requested on the form. All reference numbers will be entered, once, into the randomiser and the order in which the randomiser places the reference numbers will be recorded against the application. We shall then allocate the number of seats available to those in the order which the randomiser has generated.

For example, there are 23 seats available on service 305 and we receive 30 applications for that service. All 30 applications will have a reference number and all 30 reference numbers will be placed into the randomiser at the same time. The randomiser will then randomly order those 30 reference numbers from 1 to 30. The order will be recorded against the application and the first 23 will be offered a privilege seat. The remaining 7 applicants will go on a waiting list for that service, in the order the randomiser has generated.

Please be aware that making a privilege seat application does not guarantee a seat.

Contacting Parents/Guardians with the outcome

If you applied during the first application window (between 5th June and 16th June 2017)

We shall endeavour to contact all parents/guardians via email (if one was provided on the application form) or by letter by the end of June 2017.

If you apply during the second application window (between 10th July and 25th July 2017)

We shall endeavour to contact all parents/guardians via email (if one was provided on the application form) or by letter by mid-August 2017.

If your child has been selected as having a seat, you will be sent details of how you should pay.

If your child has not been successful in securing a seat they will be placed on a waiting list for the service(s) applied for. You will be notified that your child is on the waiting list(s) and you will then be contacted as and when seats become available.

If you have applied for more than one bus service

If you have applied for more than one bus service the randomiser may allocate your child to one or more of the requested services. If this is the case, you will be contacted (by telephone or email) and asked which bus service you would like the seat to be on so please ensure the contact details on your application form are up to date. Should we not receive an answer from you within 5 days of contacting you, your child will be allocated a seat automatically. You will not be able to transfer to a different service once a choice has been made.

Payment

If your child has been selected as having a seat you will need to make payment as soon as possible and before your child uses the bus. The current cost of a ticket is £95 per term, however, this may be subject to change.

If you applied during the first application window (between 5th June and 16th June 2017)

If you have not made any kind of payment by 2pm on Monday 31st July 2017 it will be assumed that you do not want to take up the offer of a privilege seat and the seat will be offered to a child that may be on the waiting list.

If you apply during the second application window (between 10th July and 25th July 2017)

If you have not made any kind of payment by 2pm on Friday 25th August 2017 it will be assumed that you do not want to take up the offer of a privilege seat and the seat will be offered to a child that may be on the waiting list.

You would then need to reapply during a new application window should you want to take up a seat again. Should you have difficulty in making payment by the deadline, please contact the Transport Team. Our details can be found via the ‘Contact’ tab above and you can send us a message directly from the website by clicking on ‘Send a message to this service’. If you are also applying for free transport under low income criteria, please let the Transport Team know as this may affect when you need to pay.

Please remember that if you have not made payment your child will not be permitted to travel.  This will be strictly enforced from September 2017.
