School Transport

Privilege Seat Scheme

Privilege seats are available for parents/guardians to purchase if their child is not eligible for a free term ticket and would like for them to travel on a contracted school bus service. This information is valid for transport from September 2017.

How to Apply

The application window is now live. Please apply now.

The third application window is currently open, it will made be available for applications to be submitted from:

9am on Monday 25 September 2017 and close at 4pm on Wednesday 4 October 2017, inclusive.

Further information on current bus routes can be accessed via the ‘School Bus Routes’ tab above.

You will only be able to apply for specific bus services and these services will are listed at the bottom of this web page. Should the service you require not be listed, you will not be able to apply at this time, nor can you apply to be placed on any waiting lists that may exist. Further information on current bus routes can be accessed via the ‘School Bus Routes’ tab above.

Please note: You will only be able to apply for one bus service per application form so if you live in an area which is served by more than one bus service, you will need to make separate applications for each of the services you would like your child to be considered for.

Online

Please click here to complete the online application form - Application for a Privilege Seat on School Transport’.

All of the online forms for this service can be found in the 'Do It Online' tab above.

Phone

If you are unable to complete the form yourself you can telephone the Councils’ contact centre for a member of staff to complete the form on your behalf. The phone number can be found under the ‘Contact’ tab, above.

Sixth Form Student Applications

You will not be able to apply before the first half-term of the academic year (October 2017). Confirmation of the application window for sixth form students will be updated nearer the time. Sixth form students would be expected to make their own transport arrangements in the meantime.

How the process works once an application is submitted and received

After the application window closes we shall start the allocation process:

An automated, random-number generator (randomiser) will be used to allocate children to bus services. All submitted applications will have a reference number and will be grouped together by the service requested on the form. All reference numbers will be entered, once, into the randomiser and the order in which the randomiser places the reference numbers will be recorded against the application. We shall then allocate the number of seats available to those in the order which the randomiser has generated.

For example, there are 35 seats available on service 401 and we receive 40 applications for that service. All 40 applications will have a reference number and all 40 reference numbers will be placed into the randomiser at the same time. The randomiser will then randomly order those 40 reference numbers from 1 to 40. The order will be recorded against the application and the first 35 will be offered a privilege seat. The remaining 5 applicants will go on a waiting list for that service, in the order the randomiser has generated.

Please be aware that making a privilege seat application does not guarantee a seat.

Contacting Parents/Guardians with the outcome

If you applied during the first application window (between 5 June and 16 June 2017). We shall endeavour to contact all parents/guardians via email (if one was provided on the application form) or by letter by the end of June 2017.

If you apply during the second application window (between 10 July and 25 July 2017). We shall endeavour to contact all parents/guardians via email (if one was provided on the application form) or by letter by mid-August 2017.

If you apply during the third application window (between 25 September and 4 October 2017). We shall endeavour to contact all parents/guardians via email (if one was provided on the application form) or by letter by 11October.

If your child has been selected as having a seat, you will be sent details of how you should pay.

If your child has not been successful in securing a seat they will be placed on a waiting list for the service(s) applied for. You will be notified that your child is on the waiting list(s) and you will then be contacted as and when seats become available.

If you have applied for more than one bus service

If you have applied for more than one bus service the randomiser may allocate your child to one or more of the requested services. If this is the case, you will be contacted (by telephone or email) and asked which bus service you would like the seat to be on so please ensure the contact details on your application form are up to date. Should we not receive an answer from you within 5 days of contacting you, your child will be allocated a seat automatically. You will not be able to transfer to a different service once a choice has been made.

Payment

If your child has been selected as having a seat you will need to make payment as soon as possible and before your child uses the bus. The current cost of a ticket is £95 per term, however, this may be subject to change.

If you applied during the first application window (between 5 June and 16 June 2017).  If you have not made any kind of payment by 2pm on Monday 31 July 2017 it will be assumed that you do not want to take up the offer of a privilege seat and the seat will be offered to a child that may be on the waiting list.

If you apply during the second application window (between 10 July and 25 July 2017).  If you have not made any kind of payment by 2pm on Friday 25 August 2017 it will be assumed that you do not want to take up the offer of a privilege seat and the seat will be offered to a child that may be on the waiting list.

If you apply during the third application window (between 25 September and 4 October 2017).  If you have not made any kind of payment by 2pm on Wednesday 25 October 2017 it will be assumed that you do not want to take up the offer of a privilege seat and the seat will be offered to a child that may be on the waiting list.

You would then need to reapply during a new application window should you want to take up a seat again.

Should you have difficulty in making payment by the deadline, please contact the Transport Team. You can send us a message directly by clicking here to use the ‘Send a message to this service’ form or alternatively our details can be found via the ‘Contact’ tab above.

If you are also applying for free transport under low income criteria, please let the Transport Team know as this may affect when you need to pay.

Please remember that if you have not made payment your child will not be permitted to travel.  This will be strictly enforced from September 2017.
