Service Update:

 Coroners Office availability during the IW Festival period

The Coroners Office will remain at Seaclose Offices for the period of the Isle of Wight Festival.  However, from Thursday 8th June 207 at 12 noon and all day on Friday 9th June 2017, there will be no public access to Seaclose Offices.  The Coroners Officers will be contactable by phone or email during this time.

Normal service at Seaclose Offices resumes on Monday 12th June 2017.

The following  Assistant Coroners act when the Coroner is not available and have the same duties and powers.

  • Assistant Coroner - Mr John Matthews DL. B.A. (Law).

The Coroner is assisted by three Coroners Officers. 

Overview of the Coroner service

The Coroner investigates where there is:

  • Violent or unnatural deaths.
  • The cause of death is unknown.
  • Any death which may have occurred in custody or otherwise in state detention.

Please note: Coroners are not employed by the Local Authority. However the Local Authority does fund the Coroner's service and all of the office staff are employed by the Isle of Wight Council.
