Puppets are Fun! Talk and demonstration at Cowes LIbrary Wednesday 11 October 2 - 3pm

Island enthusiast Marion Rodrigues will be giving a talk and demonstration about her life-long love of puppets, exploring her early interests using simple shadow puppets, and how it became one of the earliest forms of animation. Apart from the making, materials, methods used including performance, she will demonstrate using her own puppets from gloves to Punch and Judy, string puppets, rod/stick puppets and the Muppets! The audience will be able to participate, handling and working some of the puppets. The event is free asnd there is no need to book and is open to an adult and older children audience.

Philo Cafe at Cowes Library Thursday 26 October 7 - 9pm

This is a monthly event, sponsored by the Society for the Furtherance of Critical Philosophy and is open to anyone who wants to take part in philosophical discussion about topics that matter in our lives, but in a casual way and is based on our own experiences. Topics for discussion: Is morality relative? or Is patriotism irrational?

Adult Drawing Course with Bethany Moore

Drawing for fun and relaxation. Come along to Cowes Library to enjoy these new fun and relaxed drawing sessions for beginners and improvers. Bring a pencil and a sketchbook if you have one. A variety of paper, pencils and art materials will be provided each week so you can try out different drawing mediums and be inspired by new ideas. Refreshments are provided too!

Cost is £15 per week. Please note this has been a 6 week course, but anyone can join at anytime.

Class date are:

  • October 12, 9.30 - 11.30am.
  • October 19, 2 - 4pm.

Family History One-2-One Mondays 10am - 12pm

Cowes Library has a friendly and experienced family historian offering one to one sessions to assist with growing your family tree. Whether just starting out or needing help with a family history mystery,

Sessions are held in Cowes Library on Monday mornings at an hourly rate of £6 per hour. If this is not convenient, then speak to a member of staff to arrange an alternative time. Research can also be done for you. If you want a short consultation before booking a session, again speak to a member of staff.

Family History Online Thursday 19 October 10am - 12pm at Cowes Library

The Isle of Wight Record Office will be running a 2 hour online session showing all the family history sites available on the Internet. A listing of the sites will be made available to keep. Cost is £5 per person payable on the day. You must book in advance by contacting Cowes Library on the 'contact' tab above.

Cowes Heritage Ongoing Exhibition: 'The development of Somerton airfield'

The ongoing Cowes Heritage display in Cowes Library is currently showing 'The development of Somerton airfield' containing a mixture of interesting local information on the people, places and businesses that have been involved over the years. The exhibition can be seen during normal opening hours and is changed on a monthly basis.

During May Cowes Heritage have placed a 75th Anniversary of the Defence of Cowes and East Cowes by the Polish Destroyer ORP Blysckawica Exhibition, in Cowes Library.
