Floating bridge services resume from Sunday morning

Following overnight works (Friday) to repair the floating bridge gates, inspections of the prow mechanism and dialogue with the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) and Marine Accident Investigation Unit today (Saturday), the council will be restarting floating bridge services between Cowes and East Cowes from 6.30am on Sunday (9 August).

Members agreed to increase the cost of Wightcare services in order to balance the council’s budget deficit for the service, which is currently losing more than £450,000 per year, at a meeting of the Executive last night (4 August). Increased charges will be delivered in two phases over the next two years in order to protect residents’ finances as much as possible.

Future of the Island Learning Centre

Following the fire at the Island Learning Centre on 17 July 2015, Isle of Wight Council teams, together with colleagues from Hampshire and the Island Learning Centre have agreed an, initially, short-term solution for relocation of the school to ensure that operations can continue in the Autumn term. From September, the school will be located at the former Hunnyhill Primary School, Albany Road in Newport.

The Fire Service has responded to a fire at the Island Learning Centre, Manor Road, Lake

Fire at Island school

A fire was reported at the Island Learning Centre, Manor Road, Lake (on the site of the former Broadlea Primary School) at around midnight on the morning of 17 July 2015.  The fire service has responded and the fire is now under control; the site is being dampened down. 

There are no reported injuries. 

Teams will be on site to assess the scene and secure the site later this morning.

Today is the last day of term.  Pupils and parents are advised not to visit the site today as the Island Learning Centre will be closed.

The number of two-year-olds accessing Early Years Education Entitlement on the Isle of Wight has increased dramatically. Of those eligible, 71.5 per cent are either attending a nursery provision or childminder setting. This is a significant rise from the previous figure of 40 per cent.
