Fire control options to be considered

A meeting of the Isle of Wight Council’s Executive will next week (Thursday 8 September) consider a report which recommends a move of the Island’s fire control function from Surrey Fire and Rescue Service to Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service from April 2017.

New ride leaders to boost Active Island

Enthusiastic Island cyclists have been trained as ride leaders, through the national British Cycling ‘Ride Social’ campaign and the local ‘Isle Be Active’ campaign. The team of nine new ride leaders will be able to lead cycle rides across the Isle of Wight.

The Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Services is reminding residents of the dangers of using flares, Chinese lanterns or fireworks  in dry weather after a barn narrowly avoided going up in flames in the Carisbrooke area last week (18 August).

Island A level results improve
A-level results improve again

Almost 500 Isle of Wight post-16 A-level students received their final results today, with more passing this summer’s exams than in 2015. Provisional results reported by the Island’s school sixth forms and the Isle of Wight College indicate that students have been successful, with 90 per cent achieving the national benchmark of two A* to E passes at A-level, or equivalent. This is a three percentage point improvement on the result in 2015.
